Eugene Vindman, Trump impeachment figure, announces run for Congress

Eugene Vindman, the lesser-known sibling of Trump impeachment witness Alexander Vindman, has officially thrown his hat into the political ring by announcing his candidacy for Congress in Virginia. Vindman is vying for the open seat left vacant by Representative Abigail Spanberger, a former CIA officer who is departing to challenge Republican governor Glenn Youngkin.

“Abigail Spanberger served our district with integrity and passion, and I hope to follow her example.” Vindman said. “Families are struggling to pay for gas, groceries and housing, while Republicans in Congress fight among themselves. They have no interest in governing. America’s enemies relish in their dysfunction and the divisions they sow.”

In his campaign declaration, Vindman embraced the prevailing narrative of safeguarding “democracy” from former President Trump, who faced a second impeachment over allegations of inciting an “insurrection” at the Capitol.

Expressing his commitment, Vindman stated, “I’m no longer serving in uniform but now I have a new mission. To defend democracy, fight Trump and MAGA extremists, and serve the people of Virginia. I’m running for VA7!”

The 48-year-old retired Army Colonel, formerly a key legal and ethics figure at the National Security Council, faced dismissal along with his brother for allegedly undermining the president.

“Soldiers are trained to run towards fire, no matter the personal cost. That’s why I’m running for Congress – to defend our nation against the clear and present danger of Donald Trump and the 147 Members of Congress who voted to overthrow the will of the American people.” He said.

“I want America to remain the land of opportunity, a refuge for families like mine, where hard work makes a difference, truth prevails, rights are protected, and we are all free to be who we are and pursue our dreams.”

Both brothers played a crucial role in bringing to light President Trump’s private phone call with Volodymyr Zelensky, leading to Trump’s impeachment over alleged pressure on Zelensky to investigate Joe Biden’s Ukraine connections.

Though the Ukraine impeachment episode has faded from public memory, the Vindman brothers are leveraging their notoriety. Eugene Vindman’s candidacy received endorsements from prominent figures such as Democrat Adam Schiff, who praised him as a defender of “democracy.” Actor Ben Stiller also endorsed Vindman, describing him as “extremely decent” and a good friend.

“We need more members of Congress committed to protecting our democracy.” Schiff noted.

Months ago, Alexander Vindman faced scrutiny over reports of profiting from the Ukraine conflict through lucrative military contracts. Both brothers, immigrants from Ukraine, are known for their vocal criticism of Trump and unwavering advocacy for Ukraine and “our democracy.”
