Michigan Bans Therapies Encouraging Children to Accept Biological Sex

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, has signed a new law banning therapists from trying to convince kids to embrace their biological sex or heterosexual orientation.

However, the state still allows conversion therapies for children who want to become transgender or identify as non-straight.

The law, known as House Bill 4616, was introduced by Democratic State Representative Felicia Brabec. It prevents mental health professionals from engaging in conversion therapy with minors.

The bill defines “conversion therapy” as any practice or treatment by a mental health professional that aims to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity. This means efforts to change a child’s behavior or gender expression or eliminate their attraction to the same gender are prohibited.

“Conversion therapy does not include counseling that provides assistance to an individual undergoing a gender transition, counseling that provides acceptance, support or understanding of an individual.” it added.

However, some critics argue that the definition is too broad and could prevent healthcare professionals from helping children with gender dysphoria or encouraging them to embrace their biological bodies.

State Representative Neil Friske, a Republican, believes that the bills criminalize providers who uphold natural law and reject certain gender ideologies.

“I cannot in good faith vote for misguided legislation that potentially harms our children. Kids should not be expected to make such difficult decisions. The child’s parents, in consultation with qualified medical professionals, are better qualified to make important decisions regarding a child’s development – not lawmakers in Lansing.” Republican state Rep. Donni Steele also said.

On the other hand, bill co-sponsor Brabec stated that the law aims to protect kids from damaging pseudo-psychology, allowing them to express themselves without fear or threats.

“I can confidently say that this law will help to ensure that therapists like myself continue to do no harm in our practices, while protecting the LGBTQ youth in our state.” Brabec said.

The bills were passed in the state House on June 14 and the state Senate on June 27. They will take effect in October. Michigan now joins 26 other states in implementing partial or total bans on conversion therapies.

Governor Whitmer expressed her support for the bills on Twitter. Whitmer claimed that they are part of a broader effort to make Michigan a more welcoming and inclusive place.

“As a mom of a member of the community and a proud, lifelong ally, I’m grateful that today we’re banning the horrific practice of conversion therapy in Michigan.” Whitmer said.

“In doing so, we are taking action to make Michigan a more welcoming, inclusive place.” she added.
